What Training can you access?

Alpha Plus prides itself on the delivery of a comprehensive, quality training programme; we are dedicated to the continual professional development of our foster carers to enable them to work with parents and children in the context of a multi-cultural society, and to develop positive attitudes to disadvantaged groups.

Alpha Plus is committed to the UK National Care Standards for Foster Care. Our training courses have been cross referenced with the Training, Support and Development Standards for foster carers, the Every Child Matters Outcomes and BAAF Competencies for Foster Care.

Each of our carers has an individual personal and professional development plan, created at the point of home study assessment. Training profiles are continually updated with information about the carer’s attendance at training and is part of the foster carer’s annual review report.

Our three day preparation course is made up of new applicants, together with experienced social workers and foster carers. Course members have the opportunity to discuss the broad issues involved in becoming a foster carer including; safeguarding, fostering and the law, attachment, identity and loss issues, equality and diversity, managing behaviour and case studies.

We provide a variety of comprehensive courses post approval. If a foster carer has a specific developmental need arising out of a placement the agency will support the carer to try and source appropriate training/ strategies to assist them.

Nurturing Attachments Training

At Alpha Plus we offer Nurturing Attachment Training, this is a 13 week programme which is designed to provide support and guidance to foster carers looking after children who are experiencing trauma and attachment difficulties. It is a programme based upon Attachment Theory and an understanding of relationship development and the impact of trauma on children’s development. This theory is linked to the ‘House Model of Parenting’ which aims to help carers develop their parenting skills matched to the emotional and behavioural needs of the children. Carers are encouraged to manage behaviours by using the PACE approach: Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity and Empathy. This in turn will build trust and security with the children and enhance their development.
